Big nights for 3 future Cougs from southland

OLITO THOMPSON

THREE FUTURE Washington State Cougars had Fridays to remember last night in high school football action in sun country. Quarterback Tyler Bruggman continued his hot hand of late to lead Brophy Prep to a wild win the first round of Arizona's Division I playoffs.

Tyler Bruggman completed 22 of 28 passes for 329 yards and three TDs as Brophy downed Chandler 54-44. With the three TD passes, Bruggman has thrown 18 in his last five games vs. zero interceptions.

For the season, he has now tossed for 2,528 yards, 28 TDs and 6 INTs.

The victory improved Brophy's record to 10-2 and sets up a rematch next against Red Mountain, which earlier this season beat Brophy 33-31.

Meanwhile, in California, two future WSU running backs had special nights as well. Olito Thompson rushed for 162 yards and two TDs and also caught a 14-yard TD pass to help lead Concord (just east of Berkeley) to a 38-3 win over College Park in the regular-season finale. The victory assures Concord a spot in the state playoffs.

Thompson has rushed for 1,606 yards so far this season and has scored 22 TDs.

And in southern California, where Menafee Heritage played Elsinore for the Sunbelt League regular-season title, running back Jamal Morrow was limited by the knee injury that shelved him all of last week. But it didn't slow his Heritageteam, which won the crown with a 37-20 win.

For the season, Morrow has collected 13 TDs and more than 1,500 rushing yards.
