Over 100 high school players from nine different teams converged in Livermore on Sunday for the Passing Down Elite 7on7 Challenge. Check inside for the defensive performers...
Jovonte Page
Cornerback, Fresno (Calif.) Central
Like his fellow high school teammate Savion Simms, Page also made his Passing Down debut. Page, however, played as if he’s been to five Passing Down tournaments, with snatching three interceptions on the day and providing Team Those Guys with a physical cover corner outside. Page also showed versatility by playing safety. He even showed leadership by calling defensive plays plus showing different coverage techniques to his fellow teammates at Livermore. At a school that produced Oklahoma commits
Hatari Byrd
and former Passing Down alum
L.J. Moore
, Page made an early case that he’s next in line in Central’s loaded secondary with his Defensive MVP performance in Livermore.
Lester Williams
Cornerback, Stockton (Calif.) Stagg
The Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Challenge NorCal overall MVP dominated as a receiver but gets the nod on defense too because he was just as valuable on that side of the ball for the NorCal champs. Williams frustrated teams with his speed and playmaking skills. He also may have enhanced his stock by picking off Vanderbilt commit
K.J. Carta-Samuels
and taking the football back for the pick six in the championship game.
Earl Chism
Linebacker, Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove
One of the biggest players on TEAM ASAP, at 6-foot-3, 230-pounds, Chism showed stunning athleticism at the camp. On one play, Chism stayed in his zone coverage, read the quarterback, then made a basketball-like leap for the ball and hauled in the interception. Chism, who carries a 4.0 grade point average according to his head coach Walt Saunders, impressed with his nose for the football and athleticism.
Sedric Thomas
Safety, Elk Grove (Calif.) Pleasant Grove
A versatile match-up nightmare for opposing teams. Thomas was a moving piece for Team ASAP and impressed with his athleticism, ball instincts and closing speed..
Malik Beachum
Cornerback, American Canyon (Calif.)
Beachum is under-the-radar prospect from Contra Costa, may have elevated his status with his speed and shut down ability at cornerback. Beachum showed speed and a physical nature in the press coverage for Team Shift.
Joe Castignani
Linebacker, San Jose (Calif.) Bellarmine
If K.J. Carta-Samuels was the heart of Pro Sport, perhaps Castignani was the soul with his ability to blanket receivers from his linebacker spot. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Castignani showed fluid movement on the field and helped frustrate many quarterbacks on the day.
ABEL TAVAREZ JR.
Cornerback, Visalia (Calif.) Mt. Whitney
An unknown player before the camp, the 2014 prospect surprised the camp with his physical nature and speed. Tavarez emerged as one of the best cover men in the camp and one of the most aggressive corners with his jams at the line.
