BATB VIDEO: Barefield Talks SMU
REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- Last season, Sedrick Barefield and Corona (Calif.) Centennial got to the state championship game, only to fall to Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista, 66-55. With Barefield, 2015 prospect Khalil Ahmad and 2017 forward Jalen Hill returning, the Huskies are primed for a big run.
“Our goal, going into this year, is to be the No. 1 team in the state, and I don’t see a reason why we can’t, if we max out our potential and do everything we’re supposed to do,” said Barefield at the Battle at the Beach AAU event. “We fell short last year in the state finals. We use that as motivation to go back and win again.”
Barefield committed to SMU back in February, and is still as solid as ever with the Mustangs, with all other teams that had been pursuing him backing off.
“I haven’t gotten calls or texts from the other schools,” he said. “I’m for-sure. I’m solid. With everything going on, even though [five-star Emmanuel] Mudiay is going overseas, it doesn’t affect me. I’m still a Mustang.”
When his five-star future teammate decided to play overseas professionally instead of playing for SMU next season, Barefield was undeterred, though he was surprised.
“I was pretty shocked,” he said. “As a player, I would take the opportunity to be coached by Larry Brown, but I know he’s still going to do well. He’s still going to get drafted and have a great career, so I’m happy for him.”
As for Brown, Barefield is excited to get to learn at the feet of the only coach to have won championships both at the college and professional level.
“I have a good relationship with him,” Barefield said. “I know he’s a great guy. He wants to coach me, and we talk every once in a while. He wants to take the opportunity to coach me and turn me into a good player.”
