GSP Player Profile: David Cundiff

David Cundiff was only 15 years old last year when I watched him play football against Hiram Johnson H.S. and powerhouse Pleasant Grove H.S. He dominated both ways, in offense and defense, against Hiram Johnson’s OL/DL. I didn’t know who he was at the time, but he impressed me enough that I focused my camera on him and didn’t stop shooting until the game was over.

David is 6’3” tall and weighs in at 250 pounds. He plays OG/DT for McClatchy High School in Sacramento. David went up against players 2 years his senior last season and never gave up ground. He’s one of those athletes that plays’ his position very well, with consistency, regardless of the score. Unfortunately I don’t have any accurate stats to share on David. Something the McClatchy program will have to improve on next season, so thank goodness for parents that film games.

I watched David go head to head against one of the top recruits in the state and he did very well. If you knew the player I’m referencing then you’d appreciate what I’ve just written. David was also able to stop one of the best running backs in the country, something that is pretty hard to do for a linemen against that player. David hits hard and has created opportunities for his team through the fumbles he’s propagated. He’s quick enough to have sacked many a quarterback. He punches holes for his running backs or will fend off a defensive lineman in protecting his quarterback.

David will be attending several combines this year and will hopefully excel there as well. He’s already received unsolicited interest from several college programs. His short list of schools included Boise State, Nevada, Oregon State, Sacramento State, San Diego State, UNLV, and Washington State.

David’s a well rounded student who has a 3.6 GPA, is an accomplished heavyweight wrestler (a great attribute for a lineman to have), a discuss thrower on the track team, and to top things off is an Eagles Scout. The latter, Eagles Scout, Is an honor that only 5 % of Boy scouts receive and an honor they carry for life.

The Honorable Gerald R. Ford, 38th president of the United States, was an Eagle Scout and a lineman. He always regarded this as one of his proudest accomplishments, even after attaining the White House. Ford played center and linebacker for the University of Michigan football team and helped the Wolverines to undefeated seasons and national titles in 1932 and 1933. He was the only U.S. President who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.

Why make light of the Eagle Scouts? Well, the award is a performance based achievement whose standards have been well-maintained over the years. To earn the Eagle Scout rank, the highest advancement rank in Scouting, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in the areas of leadership, service, and outdoor skills. This should help a recruiter gauge the character of the recruit. That the recruit is driven to be successful on and off the field, with the highest level of integrity. This recruit will not only be a great football player, but a leader in the community and a role model for kids to emulate. David Cundiff has all of these qualities and more.

So, put Davis Cundiff on your radar. From one type of scout to another, I wish David the best in his endeavor to play at the next level – he’s well on his way.
