After winning the Gatorade Player of the Year award in football, UCLA incoming freshman Malcolm Jones was up for the Gatorade Athlete of the Year.
Unfortunately, he lost out to a deserving Brandon Knight who will be playing point guard for the Kentucky Wildcats this upcoming season. The loss of the award, though, didn’t dampen his experience.
“This was truly awesome. To be here with so many great athletes was such a good experience,” said Jones. “It reminded me of the things I did in high school. I won this award in December so it’s been awhile, plus I have been at UCLA for over a month now.”
One of the most highly touted running backs in the nation, Jones had offers from most of the top programs in the nation. He narrowed his choices to two schools, Stanford and UCLA.
Bruin fans were excited to learn that the Oaks Christian star would be staying in Southern California.
“I loved the academics at Stanford but UCLA has great academics too,” Jones said. Plus, I love what they were building and I really wanted to stay here in Southern California…its home!”
UCLA is preparing for the 2010 season with summer workouts and 7 on 7 practices. They are also in the process of installing a new formation too. The Pistol formation should provide a more dynamic threat to defenses trying to stop the Bruins.
“I love it. I’m a downfield runner and the formation is designed for a running back like me,” said Jones. “The spread offense is for running backs that run sideline to sideline. That’s not me. I’m a downhill guy.” “I talk to Coach (Norm) Chow a lot and I’m excited on how he’s going to use me,” says, Jones.
If you have looked at UCLA’s 2010 football schedule, fans have noticed that it is extremely challenging. They have one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
“Yes, it’s very tough but the way we feel, we believe that we will be competing for a Pac 10 title this year!”
